Say What Now?! Edition 6

Disclaimer — Pop-culture force is strong with this one.

For the uninitiated, Hitchcock and Scully are two characters from the hit, American, police comedy television series, Brooklyn Nine-Nine. It’s got adrenaline-driven acts, heists, drugs, arrests, laughs and saucy detectives who’ll make you say — cool, cool, cool, cool. If you’re planning to binge a new Netflix show, you should definitely lockdown on this one. (definitely not too soon for the puns, am I right?)

Now that we’ve done some context-setting, let me ask you a question —

How do two people become friends?

I’m sure there are many ways in which the flower of friendship blossoms. Let’s list some of them down?

  • The PPF* connection — A friendship that starts from knickers, navigates through mid-life crises and goes beyond the sunset years. (*Past, Present, Future)

  • Bitching squad, assemble — Love, hate, and gossip are the threesome (no pun intended) that give birth to this friendship.

  • Love me, love me, say that you love me — Yes, this one starts as love and ends at the gravestone of friendzone, but is alive despite it.

  • Walk down the acceptance lane — What begins with an acquaintance, is cemented with acceptance and results into ties for a lifetime.

  • The Tom and Jerry show — First it's all about stepping on eggshells around them, then it’s throwing eggs at them, and soon enjoying eggs with them.

  • Otters for each other — The most apt synonym for this friendship would be unconditional. It stands tall like the Whoomphing Willow from Harry Potter and nothing, not even the tempest can uproot it.

  • The Dee Dee and Dexter duo — This friendship could very well pass for a sibling relationship, with a liberal dose of pranks, well-intentioned interventions, the general wing person-ship.

This list doesn't really have an end, similar to the meaning of true friendship. You might have one friend, who qualifies for each of the above categories, or a friend who is all of the above rolled into one (I definitely do!).

Do you know who else has a friend who’s all of the above rolled into one? Yes, they’re in my title. It’s Hitchcock and Scully.

Here’s why —

  • They’re each other’s emotional support human. Come rain, shine, or sitting for prolonged hours on their chairs, they always have each other’s backs.

  • They take sharing and oversharing to whole new, never-before-imagined levels.

  • Everything they do, be it fake birthday schemes, gluttony-ing it out with chicken wings, or being aware of each other’s medical history, they always aim to outdo everyone, together.

  • They are always and forever on the same page, be it during a fight, while looking for Babylon (#B99reference) or on top-secret missions.

P.S. — Some of the above points might just make more sense when you watch the show.

I’m sure you’re wondering what was the reason for writing this detailed jumble of words about two characters on a TV show.

Well, no other reason, but to introduce you to the one person who’ll always be the Scully to my Hitchcock — my mother!

Surprised, are you? You shouldn't really be. Let me elaborate on the ‘why’ bit of it. My mother’s known me for over two decades now, which means that she literally knows me better than the back of her palm.

From my lazy tendencies to my history, geography, and philosophy (or the lack of it), she’s known it all and shockingly enough, she’s stuck it out with me throughout. And, I consider myself more than grateful for it.

That woman, who’ll incidentally celebrate her 51st year on the blue orb tomorrow, has been a little like my personal philosopher, more of a friend, and mostly a safety net, all my life. And, I’m sure we’ve got a long way to go.

Yes, the article is ending in quite a bit, but before that, I’d like you to go up to the Hitchcock and Scully bit. Why? Because in some capacity or the other, you share the same emotional bond with your mothers as well! And on that note, let me close this with…

A happy mother’s day! #CelebratingTheUmbilicalChord
