I’m Gonna Make You Say — ‘Say What Now!’

It was a normal Sunday afternoon, I was the normal me — you know high on drama, saying things to get a reaction, and being a complex ball of emotions; that many around me have come to love. And, here was a friend who said — your writing is so complex that when you write an email, I feel like I am reading a column in a newspaper.

Naturally, I was like — say what now!

And, then as these things turn out, he went on to explain to me that it was a compliment. All this while, my mind went — why could he not have begun with that in the first place? But, that’s what people are like you know. When they talk, walk, eat, dance and breathe, they do it for themselves first and others later. The quote should have really gone like, no man is an island without being an i-land first.

The afternoon progressed and I decided to go on TikTok, because I need to assert my rights of being a netizen, in the most plastic of ways. Where I thought I would find micro-influencers in all their glory, trying their best to make me cringe, I found Jayde Adams!

For the first and probably the only time in my 20-something life, I will be able to say that TikTok actually helped me find great quality content! It was a clip of Jayde Adams doing her stand-up act titled — Serious Black Jumper. (Yes, I know you said — say what now after watching the promo).

In her show, she went on to talk about a lot of things like — the fourth movement of feminism, mountain-like benefits of wearing a serious wardrobe, being new money and owning it, teenage girl cults and a hilariously well put analogies of the lipstick Mogul, Kylie Jenner.

While there were many bits which made me sit-up and go — WOOHOO! There was one bit that truly stuck with me. It was when she admitted to being hesitant to send emails, and if she hit send even on one of the mails in her drafts folder, her career would look like when you put Mentos in a bottle of Coca-Cola.

This famed British comedian admitting to feeling a teensy bit unsure made me feel a different kind of positive. She went on to talk a lot of confidence, the real kind and what do you know, I was impressed!

One more thing I learned from her was, there ain’t no point putting everyone on a pedestal, but it is quite important to get your point across. That’s what is confidence really! When you don’t fall prey to the world around and satisfactorily define yourself in labels like bald, fat, nerd, dark, depressed, etc.

You go out there and make your point, and just like my i-land theory, make it for yourself first and others later. So, that is exactly what I am going to do too — write a column! Yes, obviously I am going to stick to this Medium for a bit until I get the technicalities sorted, but I plan to write one and this was a build-up to it. Yep, I’m dramatic like that, you know me.

Now, didn’t I succeed in making you say — Say What Now! Which, incidentally is going to be the title of this weekly web-column too and I am going to pick and choose some novel, complex topics to give my spin to.

Think of something whacky that you’d like to write about? Reach out to me and let’s surprise them all.
